The iron latticework around and above me is stoic against the drive of ruin’s bite. As a means of going out to sea without actually moving, the pier embodies notions of play and indulgence to its limit. But, it is generally framed in terms of failure, in so much as requiring continual financial investment and maintenance. The current owner has in the past articulated his concern of how to spur growth without sacrificing the overall construction to the elements. Above me, pipes and tubes feed power and water to the clutch of cafés and gift shops. The visitors live their fantasies and feel secure. But, as inevitable, the toxic mix of salt water and oxygen steadily chews its way around the land’s prosthesis while the waves punch at the network of joints. Whilst there were signs of some remedial work, the overall condition was poor and lack of funds has condemned the structure to a gradual ruination. Seen just behind the tower is Bistrot Pierre, one of a chain of restaurants in the south of England. This branch was constructed about four years ago. It serves French cuisine, menus are bilingual and so are many of the staff. It's curious that next to a defensive structure designed to repel a nineteenth century French invasion should now stand a French eatery. Changes, events and the passage of time are all inextricably bound together. I remembered the beginning of T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets; 'Time present and time past/Are both perhaps present in time future,/ And time future contained in time past.' Julius Smit - 1st September 2021 I live a ten minute walk from the eastern edge of the South Downs National Park, Sussex, UK. Prompted by the phrases ‘seeing the full/separation from’, I decided to interpret the score by walking a length of the coast where I knew I would be acutely aware of edge and boundary and their connections with interactions as transformations when applied to the land and human presence. I walked up to Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain at 162 metres (531 feet) above sea level. It not only a marks a site for looking out across the English Channel but also for sanctuary, for communication (a radar station was in operation in the early days of the Cold War) and a place where individuals come to end their lives. The picture beneath shows a plaque on a brick wall; the plaque commemorates the heroic crossing of the channel by 5 young men in an attempt to continue their fight against the Nazis. Below reads more text stating "I passed one of the many ‘Cliff Edge’ signs; this one had a faded bunch of flowers tied to it with a bleached piece of paper bearing a written memorial. Loss, memory and belonging. Seeing the full and yet being very aware of separation."
